About Hydra Fund
Founded in 2022, the Hydra Mutual Aid Fund is a Detroit-based organization focused on improving abortion access in Michigan. Through creative, community-driven solutions, we work to fill the gaps in care and ensure that everyone who needs abortion services can access them, no matter their circumstances.
Hydra Fund is more than a support network; we are a lifeline in a reproductive healthcare system that too often leaves people behind. By bridging gaps and offering care that extends far beyond what traditional systems provide, we are redefining what abortion access looks like in Michigan.
We are a fully volunteer-run 501(c)(4) organization and a fiscally sponsored project of Ipas.
Our work
All Options Counseling
Our All-Options Counseling program provides accurate, comprehensive information and nonjudgmental guidance tailored to each person’s unique circumstances. We ensure individuals feel respected, supported, and empowered to make confident decisions about their reproductive health, affirming their right to care and autonomy.
Financial Assistance
We provide full financial coverage for telehealth abortion services, ensuring access to care without cost barriers. For those seeking procedural care, we offer partial financial support, depending on available funding.
Abortion Accompaniment Program
Our Abortion Accompaniment Program provides compassionate support to ensure no one navigates the abortion process alone. Through email, phone, text, or in-person care, we guide individuals by answering questions, addressing concerns, and offering emotional and logistical support. Whether accessing in-clinic care or self-managing at home, we are available to provide guidance, reassurance, and practical tips every step of the way.
Practical Support Connections
Our Practical Support Connections program helps individuals overcome barriers to abortion access by connecting them with trusted organizations offering services like transportation, childcare, and housing. Recognizing that many clients face broader challenges beyond reproductive healthcare, we also link them to resources for job placement, domestic violence assistance, and federal aid applications. This holistic approach addresses both immediate and long-term needs, reducing structural barriers and empowering individuals to achieve stability and support beyond the abortion process.
Why our work matters
Community Education Program
Our Community Education Program fosters lasting cultural change by building hubs of knowledge across Michigan, empowering individuals and communities to share information about reproductive health options and navigate abortion access. Through workshops, trainings, and resource distribution, we ensure accurate, evidence-based information reaches those who need it most, equipping community members to become advocates and strengthen access statewide.
Sexual Healthcare Resource Initiative
By distributing supplies such as condoms, pregnancy tests, Plan B, and other critical reproductive health items, we aim to remove barriers to access and ensure that everyone has the resources to make informed, proactive decisions about their health. This initiative not only empowers individuals but also fosters a culture of reproductive autonomy, providing practical support that aligns with our mission of holistic, community-driven care. Through partnerships with local organizations and community hubs, we extend the reach of these resources, making them accessible to underserved populations across Michigan.
In Michigan, abortion is legal through viability; however, accessibility remains a significant challenge. Many residents live more than an hour from the nearest clinic, and the high cost of care puts abortion out of reach for many individuals. This issue is compounded by the state’s lack of a comprehensive abortion fund network—one that provides consistent financial support across all regions and procedure types.
Hydra Fund is a Detroit-based organization with a network of volunteers who bring firsthand understanding of the barriers faced by people across Michigan. We are committed to addressing these systemic inequities and supporting individuals who face financial and logistical obstacles to accessing abortion care.
In response to these challenges, Hydra Fund has adopted an abortion accompaniment model, providing comprehensive support that goes beyond traditional clinical services to meet the unique needs of those we serve.
What do we mean when we say Mutual Aid?
When we say “Mutual Aid,” we mean people coming together to support one another in times of need, sharing resources, and taking collective action to meet shared challenges. Unlike charity, mutual aid is built on solidarity, not hierarchy, and it focuses on addressing systemic gaps rather than offering temporary fixes. It’s about recognizing that we all have something to offer—whether it’s time, skills, or resources—and that together, we can create a stronger, more connected community.
Where does Hydra get its name?
The Hydra represents resilience and collective power. Just like the mythical creature, when one head is cut off, more rise in its place. To us, this means that no matter how many barriers we face, there will always be someone ready to continue the fight for abortion access. Our name reflects the unyielding strength of our community and the belief that together, we are unstoppable.
