Reproductive Freedom Organizing Beyond the State

Government control of reproductive capacity has long persisted as a tool to subordinate birthing people, women, people of color, people living on lower incomes, and other marginalized groups. The Supreme Court’s harmful ruling in Dobbs made clear that both the State, its actors, and the non-profit industrial complex have failed the people, giving rise to the urgent necessity for the movement to defend itself through direct provisions to the community.

Building on the direct action model of abortion accompaniment developed by global feminist groups, this workshop will provide context to the current crisis surrounding bodily autonomy and reproduction and share a roadmap for subverting state control by building networks of support to provide safe and effective abortion regardless of legality.

*To ensure you gain the full benefit of the weekend program, which is designed to be experienced as a whole, we kindly ask that you attend all three sessions.*

Fri. 8/2 from 6-8pm: The Insurgent Legacy of Reproductive Liberation
Sat. 8/3 from 12-4pm: Solidarity Without Boundaries: Abortion Support Networks
Sun. 8/4 from 11am-2pm: Developing Care-Focused Propaganda

Location:
BULK Space Media Lab
2857 E. Grand Blvd
Unit 101, Detroit, MI 48203

What will happen: Spanning three enriching days, this workshop will embark on a comprehensive journey through the history of the reproductive rights movement, followed by insight into the principles and practices of abortion accompaniment. The culmination of our time together will be the collaborative creation of a group art project.

Who is this for: This workshop is designed for all, including activists, curious folks, community organizers, healthcare providers, and advocates from all walks of life who are dedicated to advancing reproductive rights and justice. We underscore the importance of understanding abortion access not only as a crucial component of bodily autonomy but also as a critical issue deeply intertwined with class struggle, gender identity, and disability justice.

We aim to create a holistic conversation that acknowledges the full spectrum of individuals who require access to these essential services. This workshop is particularly geared towards those who are passionate about dismantling the barriers imposed by socioeconomic disparities and are seeking actionable ways to support equitable access to abortion and reproductive health services for all, regardless of income, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

Whether you're deeply involved in advocacy, looking to enhance your knowledge, or are personally affected by these issues, this workshop offers a space to engage with the complexities of reproductive freedom. Through education, discussion, and collaborative projects, participants will leave with a richer understanding of the vital role that access to safe abortion plays in the broader fight for justice and equality.
